The Williams Group is led by Michael Williams, who has more than two decades of experience in business advocacy and strategic communication as well as federal and state government service.

Prior to founding The Williams Group, Michael was a Managing Director of Credit Suisse in the Public Policy Americas division, based in Washington, D.C. He was responsible for maintaining and expanding the Bank's relationships with members and staff of the congressional tax-writing committees and other committees such as Financial Services, Banking and Foreign Relations. Michael was directly involved in the formulation and implementation of the Bank's legislative policies and strategies.

Michael joined Credit Suisse in February 2007 from The Bond Market Association/ Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association's Washington, D.C. office, where he was Senior Vice President. In this capacity, he was responsible for representing the Association's views to various congressional committee and regulators. In addition, he oversaw the Association's close working relationships with state and local governments and their representative organizations.

Michael served as Special Assistant to the President and Staff Director for Legislative Affairs during the Clinton Administration, where he was a key member of the White House team responsible for developing and implementing the Administration’s agenda on financial services, tax and international trade legislation. Michael also served as a Deputy Assistant for Congressional Affairs at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative during the Clinton Administration.  Michael has coordinated and participated in numerous election campaigns at the federal, state and local levels.  He has also served as a congressional liaison for the National Democratic Convention for more than 14 years.

Michael holds a Bachelors degree in Sociology and Masters in Public Administration from the State University of New York at Albany. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Maryland.

Joseph Vaughan is the Managing Director, Federal Government Relations for The Williams Group, and has more than 20 years of experience in directing federal, state and local intergovernmental affairs advocacy campaigns and related economic development projects.  Those efforts focused primarily on advocacy initiatives related to the municipal bond markets, financial market regulatory reform, financial literacy and private sector diversity & inclusion practices. 

Prior to joining The Williams Group, Joseph served as the Managing Director, Federal Government Relations for the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, (SIFMA.)  While serving in this capacity, he developed strategic relationships with key Congressional leaders and caucus groups including the New Democrats, Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and Financial and Economic Literacy Caucus and directed municipal bond market advocacy efforts.

During his tenure with SIFMA, Joseph also served as Staff Advisor to SIFMA’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee (D&I) and the Municipal Government Representatives Committee, among others. The SIFMA D&I Committee is comprised of more than 50 Chief Diversity Officers and Human Resource leaders from a cross-section of SIFMA’s membership.   Through Joseph's leadership, the D&I Committee developed and championed strategic best practices and key partnerships with other diversity stakeholders including, but not limited to, the Council of Urban Professionals (CUP), National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the National Association of Securities Professionals (NASP), and the Urban Financial Professionals Coalition (UFSC.)

Joseph was elected to public office in Washington DC in 2008 and served as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for single-member district 4C05 and Chair of ANC 4C through 2014.  He has been appointed by the current and former Mayors of the District of Columbia to serve on numerous Boards and Councils, and formerly Chaired the DC Financial Literacy Council from 2013 through 2016.

Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and completed the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania.
